You May be Able to Help Solve Math Mysteries – Robin Allison, Cleveland CC

Everyone loves a mystery...and math, as it turns out, is full of mysteries, especially for students. This presentation approaches math from a surprising perspective, asking and answering deeper questions behind math logic and processes. With your help in this workshop, we can discover new ways to explain these concepts, and help our students construct a framework for understanding!

11:20 am – 12:20 pm – Concurrent Session 2

Revealing the Hidden Curriculum – Bianca Diaz and Carrie Carreno-Zingaro, Wake Tech CC

Imagine the college learning environment as an iceberg: the visible part represents what is explicitly taught; the invisible part represents the implicit norms, values, and expectations of this environment. This invisible part of learning is often called Hidden Curriculum.  Participants in this session will learn about Hidden Curriculum in Higher Ed, how it affects the student experience, and why it is important to uncover it. They will also recognize how personal experiences influence our assumptions and biases. We will explain practical strategies to reveal Hidden Curriculum in our interactions with students, and participants will have an opportunity to share strategies of their own.

Stupendous Summary Skills – Robin Allison, Cleveland CC

Contrary to what I believed in school, summarizing is a vital skill for understanding and completing assignments. But many of our tutoring clients are missing this skill, which means they struggle with reading, writing, and producing work. This presentation breaks down this skill into its two parts and provides activities that help students grasp summarizing for themselves.

12:30 pm – 1:00 pm – Networking and Tutor Discussion

1:00 pm – 2:00 pm – Concurrent Session 3

Providing High Quality Math & Science Tutoring: Insights into Applying AI, Collaborating with Educators, and Enhancing Learning Outcomes – Ethan Carrow, Beaufort County CC

This presentation is broadly aimed at sharing the insights I have gained from working to improve student experiences in tutoring and their outcomes outside of tutoring. Throughout the presentation, I will show practical applications of AI in learning, such as how chat models can be implemented to provide students with specialized explanations and practice questions. The session will also highlight the role of collaboration with instructors in improving tutoring engagement and effectiveness. Based on my experience and research-backed active learning principles, I will present tutoring strategies and insights that increase learning retention and student participation in the learning experience.

Best Practices for Effective Online Tutoring – Margaret Harris, Wilkes CC and Mitchell CC

Tutoring students online can be very different from working with students in person. This session will offer tips and best practices for working with students in online sessions to maximize student engagement and understanding.
